Discovering Jesus in His Jewish Context

SB BIB 302 – 3 Credits

Monday May 1 – Friday May 12, 2023

Course Instructors: Baruch Brian Kvasnica Ph.D (ABD), David Serner, M.A., and a variety of expert lecturers.

Course Structure: This course will have three parts:

  1. a pre-trip section that will consist of one live zoom session (date TBA);
  2. series of lectures in person during the study-tour, and
  3. the two week study-tour itself

Course description: “Discovering Jesus in His Jewish Context” is a 12-day course in Israel in which participants have the opportunity to rediscover Jesus (Yeshua) and the Land of the Bible in profound ways by engaging the geography, archaeology and Jewish context of Jesus and the Land of the Bible.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Students will gain an overview of the life of Jesus from a land, literature and language perspective.
  2. Students will gain an appreciation for the Land of the Bible and how it functions not only as a “Fifth Gospel” (to quote Jerome) but also as an integral part of the story of the Bible.
  3. Students will gain the tools to develop a well-informed and historically rooted faith in Jesus through the Land of the Bible.
  4. Students will be able to explain the complexities of the reality of the Land of the Bible today.
  5. Students will consider how the Land and spiritual formation have been intertwined: the place of space in theology.
  6. Students will engage in the ongoing discussion of the importance of both study and practice, of knowledge and interpersonal relationships.

Course Expectations (for Audit):

  • Attend the live Zoom session if possible (date TBA)
  • Read, View or Listen to Course Lesson Materials on the Jerusalem Seminary website if time allows.
  • Complete the quizzes if time allows.

Course Requirements (for Credit): A student’s final grade will comprise the following:

  • Read, View or Listen to Course Lesson Materials on the Jerusalem Seminary website.
  • Read the Book of Deuteronomy, Matthew and Acts.
  • Attend the live Zoom session (10%)
  • Complete the quizzes (30%)
  • Actively Participate in the physical study-tour course (20%)
  • Write a 10-12 page research paper on a topic approved by the instructors (Baruch Kvasnica and David Serner). Due 15 June 2023 (40%).
  • Final Grades will be based on the scale of: 90-100 A, 80-89 B, 70-79 C, 60-69 D, and under 60 is no credit.
